Past Intense – the perfect Hebrew expression for Passover

One of my favorite Modern Hebrew expressions, which I teach / review every year when Passover is around the corner, goes like this:

What it means is we overcame (literally we passed – עברנו) the Pharoah (פרעה), we shall overcome or pass (נעבור) this (זה) as well (גם). The word את serve as the marker of a definite direct object and has no corresponding particle in English.

There are several reasons why I like this saying so much. First of all, it is as an excellent example and attestation to the collective memory of the Jewish people. It references an event or a tale thousands of years old, and it employs the plural pronoun ‘we’. On top of that, it conveys optimism mixed with more than a hint of complaint, which at least for me is the essence of the Jewish spirit. By the way – have you ever noticed the only difference between complaint and compliant is where you put the I?

Anyway, the main reason I like this expression is much use and value it has for me as a Hebrew teacher, particularly for beginner students. It all comes down to the words עברנו and נעבור which are two conjugations of the same verb – עָבַר (Avar) – to pass.

The verb עָבַר (avar) is based on Binyan Paal which is the most basic verb structure in Hebrew. By most basic I mean the leanest, as it primarily employs vowel changes to conjugate, and has no consonant-based prefixes or infixes as an integral part of the pattern. It is the root at its purest from and in this case the root is ע-ב-ר (Ayn-Bet-Resh) which means to pass. This root is an essential part of the Hebrew language and culture as it is also the basis for the word ‘Hebrew’ itself – עִבְרִית (Ivrit). Just goes to show you we Hebrews went through so much – it is actually in our name.

The word עָבַרְנוּ (avarnu – we passed) and נַעֲבוֹר (na’avor – we will pass) is also a very simple and beginner friendly example of how Hebrew verbs express past and future. To say “we passed” we take the verb עבר and we add the suffix נו (which is also the final syllable of the words אָנוּ and אֲנָחְנוּ meaning ‘we’), and to say “we will pass” we add the letter Nun as a prefix in the beginning of the verb and get נעבור.

It is also interesting to note there is some kind temporal logic in the placement of the letter nun. When saying נעבור (we will pass) the action of ע-ב-ר is before the נ and can be viewed as in the future, while when saying עברנו (we passed) the core part of the verb is behind the ‘we’ element.

It is quite possible that in early development stages of Hebrew people use to say the pronoun and a fixed version of the verb separately. Meaning they said the pronoun after the verb to express completion or past tense (something like עבר אנו – anu avar which gradually became עברנו), and place the pronoun before the verb (saying something אנו עבר – anu avar which gradually became נעבור) to indicate the action hasn’t occurred yet and it is still a head of us.

The expression עברנו את פרעה נעבור גם את זה owes its revival and recognition in Modern Hebrew to one individual in particular – Israeli iconic singer-songwriter Meir Ariel. In 1990 he published an album and a song under this title which became an instant hit.

Many people think Meir Ariel himself coined this expression, but the fact is it predates him and its first part also exist in Yiddish (מיר זײַנען בײַגעקומען דעם פּרעה). Here are the song’s lyrics:

אהלן – על הכיפק, אבל המשכנו לחרוש,

דלפק שלישי בשלוש, את מי יכולנו לפגוש וכך זה חוזר
אבל עברנו את פרעה, נעבור גם את זה

הסתובבתי קצת זמן ללא מטרה,
ללא הגדרה וללא פשרה,
איבדתי גובה וקצת הכרה,
חשבתי אולי בכל זאת הגדרה,
שתתן תשובה חד משמעית וברורה – נקרעתי על זה..

ועכשיו אני תקוע בזמן החדיש,
ולמען האמת אני די אדיש.
המצב אומנם ביש אך איני מרגיש,

Meir Ariel is considered by many Israelis to be our very own Bob Dylan, who clearly was a great source of inspiration for him – both in style and in topics. Here is an old recording of Meir Ariel performing the song live and adding another verse to the song which is not in the official version:

For many radio stations in Israel, it has become somewhat of a ritual to play this song around Passover. In Passover 2020 when the entire country was under lockdown, it practically became the holiday’s anthem.
