While writing the previous post about the letter Alef, the word אֵל (El – god) and how they both relate to Superman’s name, I noticed another very symbolic meaning in both of Superman’s fathers’ names. I didn’t want to digress and make a very long post even longer, so I decided it was best to write about it in a separate post.

Superman’s Earth dad is Jonathan Kent. In Hebrew the name Jonathan is written יוֹנָתָן (Yonatan) or יְהוֹנָתָן (Yehonatan) and it can be divided into two parts. The prefix יוֹ or יְהוֹ is part of the explicit name of God, and נָתָן is a verb which means ‘he gave’ or ‘he has given’. Therefore, the whole name means ‘God has given’ or ‘God given’.

Do you see where I am going with this? It means that in the story of Superman, a guy named Jor El, which his last name means god, sent his son to a guy named Jonathan, which his first name means ‘god given’. Pretty neat, isn’t it?

The cover photo for this post is a frame from the movie Man of Steel (2013 by WB). It is one of my favorite movies and the best Superman movie ever made as far as I am concerned. For the life of me, I just cannot understand why it got such mixed reviews.
